Voters can narrow the playing field in District 1 and District 3 races during an August primary. As of the noon deadline Friday, all the previously declared candidates either qualified for the election or with- drew from contention. School board races are nonpartisan.

Candidates must reside in the district they are running for but voters across the county can participate in the election. Colon was appointed by Gov. Rick Scott in Septem- ber to replace Mary Can- trell, the former head of Manatee Technical Col- lege who had just started her first term as a school board member when she died. District 5 covers the eastern part of the county, south of State Road 64. District 1 represents the northern and eastern part of the county north of State Road 64.

8. State Rep. Greg Steube, R-Sarasota, who repre- sents District 73, was one of seven candidates who qualified for the District 23 Senate seat. The Re- publican will face other GOP candidates Doug Holder, Rick Levine, Nora Patterson and Ray Pilon in the Aug. 30 primary.

In the Democratic primary, the candidates are Frank Alco*ck III and Frank Ciril- lo. In District 70, which includes parts of Manatee, Sarasota, Pinellas and Hillsborough counties, three Democrats are run- ning: C.J. Czaia, Dan Fio- rini and Wengay Newton. The primary winner will take office, replacing state Rep. Darryl Rouson, D-St.

Petersburg. Rouson was one of five candidates who qualified for the District 19 Senate seat. The Democrat is facing other Democratic candidates Edwin Narain, Betty Reed and Augie Ribeiro.
