Calling all dog lovers to a homemade baked dog treat recipe featuring peanut butter and Carob!

CAROB PEANUT BUTTER DOG TREAT RECIPE

I’ve been doing some baking for the holidays and decided…while I had everything out…to whip up a batch of Carob Peanut Butter Dog Treat for my best kitchen helpers! They are always at the ready to taste-test and help with clean up – I really think they expect a salary but I insist they get paid in treats instead!

To make them happy…and continue providing their lazy-brand of security, I made their favorite peanut butter treats…then decided to dress them up with melted carob chips and peanuts. Yum!

If you can roll out dough, then you can make these treats in no time. The ingredients go into one bowl, then get rolled out. If you don’t have a dog bone cookie cutter, just cut them into bars and bake them up. I don’t think your furry friends will care! Store them in the fridge or freeze them They hold up pretty well. If you find that your dough is too dry, add a little more applesauce to moisten it.

HOW TO MAKE CAROB PEANUT BUTTER DOG TREATS

This recipe is based off of my popular Homemade Apple Peanut Butter Dog Treats recipe. Some other recipes use vegetable oil for moistness, but I find that the applesauce is a healthier alternative. Honestly, most dogs don’t need the extra calories either.

INGREDIENTS

Peanut Butter – the best kind is all natural peanut butter, the kind you have to stir to mix the peanuts and oil. READ THE LABEL TO BE SURE THAT IT DOES NOT CONTAIN XYLITOL! That sweetener can be poison for dogs!!

  • Oat Flour – you can by this already made, or make your own from simple old-fashioned rolled oats. I make my own oat flour by running the oats thru the food processor until the oats are course ground. The oats will have the texture of coffee grounds.
  • Unsweetened Applesauce – read the label for no added sugar or color.
  • Carob Chips – it might look like chocolate, but these kind of chips are safe for dogs. They contain no caffeine nor the compound called theobromine. (Theobromine is found in chocolate and can be very toxic to your dog.)

Ingredients

  • 4 cups oat flour more as needed
  • 2/3 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 6 ounces carob chips
  • 1/2 cup unsalted peanuts chopped

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line large baking sheet with parchment paper.

  • Combine the oat flour, peanut butter, applesauce and eggs in a large bowl. Mix thoroughly. If dough is sticky, add a little oat flour until you can handle the dough without it sticking to your hands.

  • Transfer dough to a flat surface and roll out to about 1/4 inch thickness. Using a cookie cutter, cut our your shapes. Transfer to baking sheet.

  • Bake 20-25 minutes until the cookies are dry and starting to darken at the edges. Cool biscuits completely on a wire rack.

  • Toss carob chips into a shallow bowl. Using a microwave or double boiler, heat the carob chips until just starting to melt. Quickly stir until all chips are melted and carob is smooth. Pour peanuts into shallow dish or plate.

  • Working quickly, dip one end of dog biscuit into carob, top only, to coat. Immediately roll in chopped nuts. Press down on nuts to anchor. Place on tray or wire rack to cool and allow carob to harden.

  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Chef Tips

Treats can be frozen, packed in airtight container for up to 3 months. I use a large dog biscuit shape cookie cutter and get about 18 treats from this recipe. The recipe ingredients are considered safe for dogs, but as with humans, it’s always a good idea to make surethere are no canine allergies or sensitivities to any of the ingredients.
